The Propylaeum Club is located in a well preserved historic building from the 20th century. When visiting the Propylaeum Club you feel as if you have entered a grand Victorian home. It was once the home to a wealthy businessman. The Propylaeum Club was built in 1890 by John W. Schmidt, a brewer from Germany, located just down the street from the Morris-Butler home and the President Benjamin Harrison's home, it was just as grand. The members of the Propylaeum club, which is composed of women with the purpose to "inspire a love of literature, music, science, and the fine arts....to furnish Indianapolis with a woman's social and cultural center", decided to house their society there in 1922. With the beautiful Victorian achitecture anyone would jump at the chance to hold an event here. The house is a combination of Romanesque Revival, Neo-Jacobean and Queen Anne styles of architecture.
The interior has been perserved to look Victorian. Upon walking in one feels as if he/she has entered the 1800s. The ceilings are especially noticable. They have delicately refined paintings on them, one of which was original to the home. There are also seven second-story bedrooms- fully furnished with antiques. These can be rented if you host an event here. Along with this is a third-story ballroom with hardwood floors that makes an excellent reception hall for weddings and parties.
